Custom Wood Stain with Aniline Dye

Custom Door Stain with Aniline Dye from John Q. Shearer on Vimeo.

Wondering how we got such a dark stain on these doors? The answer is aniline dye.

First, we sanded the wood down and cleaned the surface up with a damp rag. We dusted and vacuumed the surrounding area, because as is important with most, if not all of our projects, we didn’t want any debris to affect the materials with which we would be working. Next, we opened the pores in the wood with a damp solvent rag.

The prepped wood was then treated with the aniline dye. Next, the stain was applied, following by the sanding sealer. The wood was then shaded and glazed for uneven areas, as well as toned where the wood appeared blotchy.

Next, the wood is sealed again, sanded, and treated with a finish coat that can be oil, lacquer, conversion varnish, polyurethane, etc.
