Dailymotion’s website asks, “What good is a video, if it’s stuck on your camera, hard-drive, or mobile phone?” And thus, the video sharing service’s mission statement is about “finding new ways to see, share and engage your world through the power of online video.”
Dailymotion is located in the 18th arrondissement in Paris, France. It is the largest video site in the world after YouTube (its domain name was registered one month after youtube.com was registered), with 72 million unique users every month since October 2010, and it’s one of the top 50 most visited websites in the world. Users use Dailymotion to find or upload videos based on their interests or hobbies; eyewitness news accounts are also available on the site.
Videos can be shared publically or privately with friends and family; you can also discover new videos through common interest “tags,” “channels,” or user-created groups. The search system will also produce results based on keywords other users have searched for. Feedback on your videos is available, and you can spread videos across the web by posting them onto your website, blog, or social network.
Dailymotion uses Stupeflix technology, which provides a tool for users to create video slideshows. To access the link to the slideshow creation tool, go to the Option menu > settings > extra. Slideshows take at most 30 pictures and a music file. Stupeflix slideshows aren’t rendered in flash, but in a MP4 video format.
The site supports video content that plays at 720p on a HD set; unfortunately, the bit rate is less than the 5 – 9 megabits for expected HD quality. The maximum size of a video file is 2 gigabytes, and the length of a video can only be 20 minutes, excluding MotionMakers and the Official Users.
Videos uploaded by members are converted to the VP6 codec at a resolution of 320×240. Audio on videos is encoded as MP3 at 96 kbit/s in stereo.
By 2007, Dailymotion had signed a huge deal with the Canal+ network. The deal stated that Dailymotion would broadcast its full television series. Canal+ videos are shown on an encrypted channel of Dailymotion with anti-piracy security. Within a year, the website’s revenue increased to €10 million with an estimated 8 million different visitors/month in France alone.
This financial partnership gave Dailymotion the support it needed to upgrade its servers to handle High Definition video and to display its MotionMaker videos. The HD quality (1280 x 720 pixels and 1.58 to 1.85 Mb/s) was made available to MotionMaker users by February 2008. By October 2008, HQ quality (512 x 384 pixels, 30 images/second; H.264 used for images and AAC at 96 kb/s for sound) was made available to all users. The site announced in May 2009 that its videos would be available using HTML5 video element using an Ogg video format.
With the aid of Audible Magic, Dailymotion implemented an acoustic fingerprinting system which detects copyrighted videos and then doesn’t publish them. Dailymotion is the first video sharing website to use this technology (supplied by INA).
